Tune in to find out if Roastee Kenny Kunene was scorched by the scathing comments of Jimmy Carr and theRoasting panel – or did he escape unscathed? While “Roastmaster” Jimmy Carr and “Roasters” Dineo Ranaka,Jack Parow, P.J. Powers, John Vlismas, Tumi Morake, Khanyi Mbau, Rian van Heerden and Somozi Mhlongoengaged enthusiastically in Roasting Kunene – who actually came out on top? Which of the Roastees gets more of a grilling than they bargained for? And does British Roastmaster Jimmy Carr heap Peri-Peri sauce on all and sundry? Or do they make toast of him instead…?
Never a tame convention and rated strictly over-18, the Roast is liberally garnished with below-the-belt sex jokes, sushi jokes, fat jokes, fraud jokes, prison jokes, slut jokes, gay jokes, Zuma jokes, biltong jokes and topical gags about that trial, consistently delivering gasp-out-loud gags that go right up to the line – and then cross right over it…
The Roast, taped at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, on Thursday 3 April, begins with a flourish as a dapper Kunene, channelling James Bond, makes a triumphal rockstar entrance clad in an electric blue smoking jacket, surrounded by scantily clad cabaret dancers. As a cigar-smoking Kunene descends the neon lit staircase, he magnanimously scatters bank notes while blowing extravagant kisses to his dancers and the Roasting panel.
Bling is the order of the day on the dazzling Roast set, lavishly dressed in black and gold and flanked by two giant ’K’s and a rococo-inspired gilt throne for Kenny. Sequinned curtains, gilt-framed mirrors and giant pastiches of Kenny portraying great men/women in history – including Napoleon, Barack Obama, the Mona Lisa, Queen Elizabeth II and Michelangelo’s David – completed the over-the-top look.
