As the sunny season approaches and we start planning our holidays, sunscreen is (and should be) an essential item on the family packing list. Good quality sun care with broad-spectrum protection will keep you and your family protected from the harmful effects of the South African sun, but as you dive into the waves, have you ever thought about the potential impact the products you use can have on the ocean and marine life?
Many ingredients found in sunscreens and certain sun filters are not biodegradable and can be assimilated by corals and other marine organisms, which can have a very harmful impact on marine ecosystems.
With this in mind, Eau Thermale Avène (No.1 sun care brand in Europe) have introduced a range of sun care that offers optimal sun protection while minimising environmental impact. A project called, Skin Protect, Ocean Respect.
Protect as much as you love
Whether you are lounging in the sun, enjoying outdoor activities or simply sitting in an office – you are exposed to UV rays almost everywhere.
EXPOSING YOUR SKIN TO THE SUN, NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE,
IS NOT WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE.
We all know the dangers of UV rays. They can cause sunburn, DNA damage, dark spots, premature aging and increase your risk of skin cancer.
FOR ADULTS
In addition to the dangers posed by UV rays, sun exposure can lead to skin dehydration, which causes discomfort and sensations of tightness.
FOR CHILDREN
The extreme sensitivity of their skin, as well as the different aggressions which they may be exposed to – sun, sand, chlorine and salt – require enhanced protection.
How do you and your family enjoy the sun with peace of mind?
To help everyone make the most of the sun, Avène Dermatological Laboratories are constantly improving the performance of their sun care products. Approved for their efficacy and optimal tolerance, essential for sensitive skin, they now enter a new phase in protecting skin against the sun. Sun care products that are more comprehensive, more convenient, and even more enjoyable to use.
Enhanced environmental commitment – Since 2013, Eau Thermale Avène Sun Care has been developed in line with a very strict formulation charter in order to provide the best sun protection, whilst minimizing their environmental impact. In keeping with this eco-friendly approach, the brand is continuously improving its formulas and packaging to live up to their SKIN PROTECT, OCEAN RESPECT promise.
Eau Thermale Avène Turtle Conservation Campaign – HELP SAVE THE TURTLES THIS SUMMER
Between November and February every year, endangered loggerhead and leatherback turtles make their way to selected beaches of KwaZulu-Natal & Mozambique to nest. Female turtles come to the shore at night to dig a nest and lay their eggs. Once the nesting process is complete, the female turtle returns to the ocean. After an incubation period of two months, the turtle hatchlings make their way into the ocean. The eggs and hatchlings face many threats, including predators, poachers, pollution and human disturbance. It is estimated that only 1 out of 1000 hatchlings make it to maturity.
In keeping with our Skin Protect, Ocean Respect pledge, R10 of every Eau Thermale Avène Sun Care product sold
November to December 2019 will be donated towards turtle conservation initiatives along the Southern African coast. Funds raised will be used for the monitoring, tagging and conservation of nesting females and their hatchlings.
We look forward to making a positive impact in the future of these fascinating marine creatures.
