Legendary local acts to burn up the stage at DStv Delicious Festival

A line-up of legendary South African artists is set to thrill audiences at the fifth DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival when Hugh Masekela, Thandiswa Mazwai and Black Coffee Live with band take to the stage on 7 and 8 October at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand.

Jazz legend, Hugh Masekela, hardly needs an introduction. The world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer started playing trumpet when he was 14 and began to hone his Afro-Jazz sound in the late 1950s. Notably, he performed in the 1959 musical, King Kong, which was written by Todd Matshikiza. Soon thereafter, he performed as a member of the South African group, the Jazz Epistles, along with Kippie Moeketsi, Abdullah Ibrahim and Jonas Gwangwa. They were the first African jazz group to record an LP and perform to record-breaking audiences in Johannesburg and Cape Town through late 1959 to early 1960.

The Witbank-born Masekela’s rich history includes performing in different jazz ensembles, attending the Manhattan School of Music, living and working in the United States, touring with Paul Simon, being featured in the documentary ‘Amandla!’, releasing an autobiography, recording numerous albums and creating a series of videos on ESPN with his son, Selema Masekela.

The sublime South African songstress, Thandiswa Mazwai, is set to raise temperatures at this year’s festival. This influential artist’s career took off in 1998 with Bongo Maffin, one of South Africa’s pioneering kwaito bands. After six award-winning albums with Bongo Maffin, she went solo. Her debut album, Zabalaza (2004), achieved double platinum status and won numerous awards including a Kora for Best African Female Artist and four South African Music Awards (SAMAs). It was also nominated for a BBC Radio 3 Planet Award.

Mazwai’s critically acclaimed second album ‘Ibokwe’ (2009) reached gold status within weeks of release and her live DVD ‘Dance of the forgotten Free’ (2010) won SAMAs for Best Female Artist and Best Live DVD in 2011.The Guardian recently referred to her as “South Africa’s finest female contemporary singer.”

Black Coffee will elevate energy levels at Kyalami with his distinctive home-brewed afro-house band. Delicious fans are in for a rare treat as this won’t be a normal DJ set by the renowned DJ, Black Coffee will perform live with a band (backing vocalists, percussionist and keyboardist). A record producer and DJ, Black Coffee has released five albums and a live DVD under his Johannesburg-based record label, Soulistic Music. He is arguably the most prominent electronic music producer in Africa, whose big break occurred shortly after being chosen as a participant in the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy. In September 2015, he won the Breakthrough DJ of the Year award at the DJ Awards in Ibiza, a few weeks after the release of his fifth studio album, Pieces of Me.

“The involvement of African acts at the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival is important to us. The opportunity for visitors to experience 3 globally recognized African artists over one weekend is a critical part of DStv’s endorsement of local, African content.

The DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival is truly South African, and this is why we have become the only event to be a member of the Proudly South African campaign” commented Nomsa Mazibuko, Group Head of Marketing at MultiChoice.
