Leading women’s sports initiative gsport is set to re-launch as seven eminent women make the pledge to raise the profile of women’s sport in South Africa.
The formation of the gsport Trust comes as the initiative celebrates its seventh birthday after its launch on 1 August 2006, with the aim of telling the story of South African women in sport, and raising their profiles to encourage greater sponsorship.
The esteemed women who join founders Kass Naidoo and Ryk Meiring on the gsport Trust are international swimming icon Penny Heyns, running legend Elana Meyer, netball icon Hazel Gumede, world leader in visual performance, Dr. Sherylle Calder, leading woman in sports media, Lebo Mabena, and youth influencing icon and media personality, Anele Mdoda.
“gsport has been run as a voluntary association for seven years, and we are excited at the evolution of gsport as it continues to raise the profile of our women in sport,” said Naidoo.
“According to the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, one of the key issues shackling women’s sport is its lack of exposure in the media.”
