Arnold Classic Africa in partnership with Gauteng Provincial Government and SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) today announced the launch of the Arnold Classic Africa (ACA), also known as the Arnold Classic Sports Festival to take place in South Africa for the first time ever.
Already hosted in five continents, this annual multi-sport event named after legendary professional actor, bodybuilder and politician Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, now in its 28th year, will be showcased at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 27 – 29 May.
The festival aims to bring over 10 000 participants across a wide range of sporting codes, including fencing, bodybuilding, handball, martial arts, boxing, pole fitness and table tennis, to the city of Johannesburg over the three day festival.
The festival which was co-founded by Schwarzenegger and sports promoter Jim Lorimer in 1989, aims to advance smaller sporting codes and promote health and fitness.
Arnold Sport Festival South Africa recently formalised and secured a four-year partnership and sponsorship deal with the Gauteng Provincial Government and SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee). This strategic partnership is testament to the commitment by government and sporting associations for the advancement of all sports in South Africa.
‘Arnold Classic Africa was conceptualised following our experience at the Arnold Classic in Columbus Ohio in 2012. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made clear his intention to globalise the festival and we immediately made contact with the Arnold International President, Bob Lorimer and set the ball rolling, Four years down the line we are about to realise a long standing dream, and we are super excited to host the first Arnold Classic Africa this May’, says former World’s Strongest Man and Arnold Classic Africa frontman, Wayne Price.
‘School sport is critical to the ultimate performance of South African teams. We believe that the schools located in the communities form the core of development in sport and as such we go out of our way as the sports movement to nurture, promote and encourage teachers and community leaders to be involved in the development of school sport’, says President of SASCOC, Gideon Sam.
‘The Arnold Sports Festival gives us an opportunity to expose a large number of sport to the public. The beauty of the festival is that it all takes place in a confined space enabling the public to see a number of sport. The exposure the various sport will get is huge and a plus for sport development in the country’, he concludes.
The festival features over 12 Olympic sports and various IFBB Pro League contests, the Arnold Strongman Classic and the world famous Arnold Amateur.
The various sporting codes and events include:
